Hamlet Act 1 Scene 3 Summary

This scene begins with Laertes and Ophelia, both children of Polonius, talking about Hamlet. Ophelia is revealed to be the lover of Hamlet and is being warned of Hamlet’s sincerity. Ophelia becomes defensive about Hamlet and tries to prove to her brother that Hamlet can be trusted and that his love for her is real.

After their discussion has gone on for quite a while, Polonius enters the scene and is updated on the conversation between his two children. The rest of the scene his filled with Polonius and Ophelia wishing Laertes farewell, as he is heading for Paris. Polonius gives Laertes lots of advice that Laertes should take with him. For example he tells Laertes to not lend money as it can ruin frienships, to have friends but keep most at their distance, to listen a lot but do not speak much and finally he tells him to be himself.
